September 2007 That Reminds Me
Stuff about stuff
Emily Schilling Editor
I’ve received several calls and comments from readers asking where to find the tennis-racket shaped bug zapper I mentioned in my June column.
Actually, I haven’t seen it in any stores recently (let me know if you have), but I did check on the Internet and it is available from different vendors for as little as $7.99, excluding postage and handling. Try typing in “Electronic Bug Zapper” and begin your cyber-shopping adventure. Soon, you’ll be armed and dangerous — at least toward insects.
In this issue, we showcase various electricity-related stamps. Back in the ’80s, I dabbled in stamp collecting when I acquired several first day covers of stamps. Alas, my interest waned, and though I still have my binder of stamps, I haven’t added to my collection in years.
Since then I’ve amassed many items in a multitude of other collections. I collect fall preview editions of TV Guides. (Tip: These are my secret to success in the entertainment categories of Trivial Pursuit.) I collect quilts, old recipe booklets, cook books, decorative snowmen, teapots, and memorabilia from my favorite TV show as a kid, “That Girl.” Like many women, I collect shoes. I have a collection of tin canisters, although I haven’t populated that collection in awhile. Instead, my husband and I scour antique stores for old Schilling brand spice tins. Those relatively inexpensive finds make up one of my newest collections.
I’m not sure why I start all these groupings — but once I acquire a few like items, I invariably get a few more and the collection is unstoppable.
At least I don’t have to explain my collection obsession to my husband. His various collections have reached museum-sized proportions. Entire rooms in our house are filled with mass quantities of his memorabilia. We’re thinking of redoing our guest room and theming it around all his Snoopy collectibles that are currently crammed into a single tall bookcase in the basement. I’m just not sure how many adult guests would appreciate the guest room decor, especially the vintage Peanuts pillowcases and sheets.
Are you as collection-obsessed as my husband and me? What do you collect? Drop me a line and let me know. I may include your stories in a future column. Oh, and if you have any “That Girl” stuff you want to get rid of, maybe we could make a deal!
