Ants at the picnic
ant2.jpgKeep ants out of chips with this antsy clip!

June’s warmer weather means you and your family can enjoy eating outdoors. Of course, anytime there’s a picnic, ants are sure to crash the party!

Keep them out of bag of chips with this handmade clip decorated with a King Kong-sized ant (at least from a real ant’s perspective). We don’t know if the pompom ant scares the pesky critters away or if the clip makes it difficult to get to the chip crumbs, but we do know it works!

What you’ll need:
• Clothespin
• Red paint and small brush or red permanent marker
• 2 red chenille stems
• 1 large red pompom
• 2 small red pompoms
• Tacky glue

ants.jpgTo make:
Paint or color the clothespin red. Let dry.

Cut a 2-inch piece of the chenille stem. Bend it into a U shape. Glue to the top of the clothespin with the ends of the U facing forward (where it clips down). Glue a small pompom on top of the U. This is the ant’s head and antennas.

Cut a 5-inch piece from the same chenille stem. Shape it into a U. Glue near the first pompom to make the first set of legs. Glue a second small pompom next to the first pompom.

Cut the second chenille stem in half. Twist together in the middle. Separate and bend to make four distinct legs. Glue these legs onto the clothespin behind the second pompom. Now, glue the large pompom next to the second pompom.

A cool treat for dad

If you're planning a Father's Day picnic with your new chip clip, surprise dad by making him some homemade ice cream. It's easy and fun!

Here's how to shake and make homemade ice cream in a bag!

What you’ll need:
1 gallon-size plastic zipper lock food storage bag
1 pint-size plastic zipper lock food storage bag
Ice cubes
6 T. rock salt or water conditioner salt pellets
1/2 cup cream or half and half
1/4 t. vanilla
1 T. sugar

To make:
1. Fill the gallon-size bag half-full of ice, then add the rock salt. Seal the bag.
2. Put cream, vanilla and sugar into the small bag. Seal it.
3. Place the small bag inside the large one. Seal it again making sure the zipper lock is securely closed.
4. Shake for about 5 minutes. The contents of the small bag should have turned into ice cream.
5. Carefully open the large bag and remove the small bag.
6. Wipe off the top of the small bag. Open it carefully. Scoop contents into a small bowl or let Dad enjoy his ice cream straight from the bag. Top with nuts, chocolate syrup or sprinkles if desired.

This recipe makes about 1 scoop of ice cream. Double the recipe if you want more, but don’t make any more than that at one time. The added ice called for in the recipe can make the bag too heavy if you make too much ice cream!

(To avoid a salty mess if the larger bag springs a leak while shaking, we suggest making this over a sink or outside.)
