Scrub-a-dub, Dad!
Make Dad a ‘soap-on-a-rope’ for Father's Day
Father’s Day is just around the corner and now’s the perfect time to show your dad how much you love him with this practical homemade gift. Soap on a Rope is lots of fun to make, too.
Just be careful when you’re grating the soap. Stop when the soap bar is too small to hold comfortably in your hand. Dad … and Mom ... wouldn’t want you to cut your fingers when you’re making this gift!
How to make ‘Soap on a Rope’ 2 bars of soap An old cheese or vegetable grater Mixing bowl A handful of oatmeal (optional) A half cup (or less) of warm water Wax paper 2-foot long piece of clothesline
Grate (or have your mom or older sibling help you grate) the soap into the bowl. (When the soap bars get too small to grate them safely, set them aside to save for other uses.)
Add warm water slowly and mix the wet soap shavings with your hands until they feel like moist clay. To give the mixture a little texture, add a handful of oatmeal and continue kneading the soap with your hands until the oatmeal in mixed in evenly. (Oatmeal helps remove excess oils from skin and helps scrub away dry skin flakes.) Let the mixture sit for a few minutes.
In the meantime, put a 12-inch piece of wax paper down on a work surface. Also, cut off a 2-foot long piece of clothesline. Place the soap on the wax paper. Fold the rope in half. Put the two ends of the rope into the middle of the soap mixture and form a ball around the rope ends with the soap. Let the soap on the rope dry for one to three days before giving it to your dad.
