Tip of the ‘hat’ to January

hats.jpgHave you heard the expression “wearing many hats?’ It means that someone, or something, does a  lot of things.

January is a month of many hats since there are lots of things going on!

New Year’s Day is a day of new beginnings, making resolutions and watching parades and football games on TV.

Jan. 21 is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. On that day, we honor a champion of equal rights.

During the month, kids start a new semester at school and often have to suffer (just joking!) through a snow day or two!

Jan. 15 is National Hat Day. How perfect is that?

The month of January has also been named Oatmeal Month, Thank You Month and Creativity Month.

And, Jan. 31 is Inspire Your Heart with Art Day.

To help you celebrate January, have fun with the following projects. One is an oatmeal clay. You can make a hat shape paperweight with the clay and present it as a Thank You Month gift to your teacher at the end of the first semester.

The other is a homemade sketch pad. Use the pad to express yourself during Creativity Month.

Oatmeal Clay

What you’ll need:

1 part flour
2 parts oatmeal
1 part water

To make:
Mix ingredients together. Form into shapes and let dry. Pieces can be painted when dry.

Creativity Sketchbook

What you’ll need:
1 poster board
Sheets of white computer paper
Hole punch
Scissors
Ribbon or yarn
Paints or markers (optional)

To make:
Cut the poster board. It should be 22 inches wide and 14 inches tall. With the poster board placed in front of you horizontally, fold it over like a book but leave a 3 inch wide flap     on the bottom layer. Put the computer paper inside your poster board “book” and punch two or three holes along the edge of the book. Bind the paper and book cover together with ribbon or yarn.

To close the sketchbook, fold the flap in, punch two holes in the front cover and two matching holes in the flap. Thread ribbon or yarn through the holes and tie together. You can decorate the cover with paints or markers if you want.
