What do the late noted Hoosier artists T.C. Steele and Will Vawter have in common with current Hoosier students Sara Bohm, Heidi Ziebarth, Mikala Greenlee and 19 others representing all grades, kindergarten through high school senior? All have been, or soon will be, part of an art exhibition of the
Hoosier Salon.
The Salon is the 85-year-old association of Indiana artists, galleries and patrons.
Electric Consumer and Indiana’s electric cooperatives are proud to announce a new partnership with the distinguished organization in congratulating the 22 student artists whose works will be represented in the
2011 Cooperative Calendar of Student Art.
The calendar is illustrated each year with art from Indiana students in grades kindergarten through high school senior. Sponsored by
Electric Consumer, an art contest, open to all Indiana students, is held each spring. The winner of each of the 13 grade divisions is used to illustrate the cover and the months of the calendar. An additional nine student artists are recognized in a special honorable mention section in the back of the calendar.

To acknowledge and celebrate the 22 students, Hoosier Salon will be exhibiting their works at the Indiana State Museum the week of Sept. 28-Oct. 2, as part of the Hoosier Salon’s annual exhibition.
“Part of our mission is educational outreach,” said Donnae Dole, executive director of the Hoosier Salon. “We have been looking for opportunities that could expand our reach into the state and begin to interest young artists who could be the future Hoosier Salon award winners. This partnership is perfect for us because the [cooperative art calendar] was already established.”
“All of us at
Electric Consumer are excited about this unique opportunity to introduce our talented art contest winners to a broader audience,” said editor Emily Schilling. “We look forward to a long and mutually productive relationship with the Hoosier Salon as we work together to promote artistic expression among young people.”
The student calendar works also will be exhibited at Hoosier Salon galleries in Wabash, New Harmony and Indianapolis. Hoosier Salon will host the artists, their parents and other special guests at a reception Sept. 30 at the state museum.
The Hoosier Salon exhibition of 172 juried works from 135 of state’s finest artists will be open to the public at the Indiana State Museum in Indianapolis through Oct. 17 and then tour the three Salon galleries through November.
The Hoosier Salon legacy began in 1925 when the Daughters of Indiana opened the doors to the first exhibition at Marshall Fields and Company Galleries in Chicago. The high quality of art, which included works by Steele and Vawter, was applauded by critics and the public alike.
The 2011 calendar, the 13th cooperative calendar to showcase the student artwork, will be available free of charge early next month at the offices of participating REMCs/RECs around the state, or by mail for a small cost from
Electric Consumer. A few REMCs will be inserting the calendar for all their members with the October
Electric Consumer.
Check next month’s issue to find out where or how to get a copy. The contest winners were featured in the
May Electric Consumer.
Details and rules about the art contest to illustrate the 2012 calendar will also be announced in October in this publication and on this website. A special mailing will also be sent to past participating schools. The deadline will be March 18, 2011.
