‘Soap’ up the sun with some homemade bubblesNothing inspires giggles and glee in even the youngest kids as much as blowing soap bubbles. Though bubbles can be blown anywhere, it’s extra-fun to create them outside and watch them shimmer in the sunlight!
It’s very easy to make your own bubble solution. Just mix 2 T. of dish soap with 1 cup of water. A better, longer-lasting solution calls for 1 T. glycerin (available in drug stores),
2 T. dish soap and 9 oz. water. Double, triple or quadruple the recipe as needed. Place in a container (or several containers) that you can take outside to make the bubbles. A tip: It’s best to mix up the solution the day before you use it.
Now that you have the bubble solution you’ll need a wand to actually make the bubbles. There are several ways to make a wand:
• Loop a 10-inch piece of string around the end of a coat hanger. You’ll be able to make big bubbles with this wand!
• With your parents’ help, cut the center out of a plastic lid (like from a yogurt or spreadable margarine/cream cheese container). Using a thumb tack, attach the lid to a wooden chopstick.
• Make a small loop with a chenille stem (pipe cleaner). Attach another chenille stem to that to use as a handle.
• A fly swatter can be used as a bubble wand. The tiny grids of the fly swatter can create loads of bubbles at once.
• Dip a small cookie cutter in the bubble solution and then make bubbles.
